Paul Simon – The Obvious Child

#Friday. Even though the sound can be just as bad as (if not worse than) every other outdoor show, between us we’ve seen some surprisingly good gigs at Hyde Park in recent years. Neil Young in ’09 was near to mind blowing and Blur weren’t half bad either. With this in mind, and even with the forecast as patchy as it was always going to be right now (what with rain being so on trend), we must confess to being more than a little jealous of those going along to watch Paul Simon on Sunday night. The entirety of Graceland being played AND Ladysmith Black Mamabazo popping on stage for the duration … not that shabby. So in honour of this event we are not going to and in a vague attempt at being unpredictable, we thought we’d post something obvious from Rhythm Of The Saints instead.

#Friday. It’s almost time for the annual low cal pimms + strawberries + cream fest over here in Angleterre. We thought we’d get ourselves (very tenuously) into the spirit of things with this new remix by the aptly named Denver duo. Tiffin anyone?

David Byrne – Hanging Upside Down

Taken from the album ‘Uh Oh’ (iTunes)

#Friday. A few short listens to ‘Who’ by David Byrne & St. Vincent from the ‘Love This Giant’ collaboration (re which grab a free download of ‘Who’ via the link here), and we could not stop ourselves from recalling ‘Uh Oh’ from the vaults for the god-knows-how-many-eth time once again. One of the least weird tracks on a great big weird pop record that still sounds utterly idiosyncratic 20 years down the line, ‘Hanging Upside Down’ was never our favourite tune from the record but it’s still quite excellent. And oddly enough we’re not feeling that weird right now, so it seems to fit the bill pretty well.

#Friday. Quite possibly prophetic after all the magnificent weather in UKland of late. Shame this video is not the full length album version, but still one of our favourites from one of the most (understandably) praised records of the year so far. Is it weird that the Donna Summer sampling outro still makes us feel a little too sad inside? Probably.

#Friday. What are the odds of this finding its way onto Queenie’s private playlist when she goes for her Thames barge ride on Sunday? Possibly not quite the kind of jubilation she’ll be looking for. It’ll do for her less refined subjects like us though.

#Fronday? We were busy pushing our way in to Brixton Academy before we remembered that we had not hit the go button on our Friday post as intended. But we think this track works just as well for the start of a week as it does for the end of one (musical fudge then). And we like the photo too. Is that Gallagher Snr guesting at the end though? First heard courtesy of Who The Hell?

Taken from the ‘On Top Of The World’ EP
Released 31 May on Pepperbox Recordings

#Friday. We’re recommencing our anti-rain-at-the-weekend-dance at GPS HQ today. Based on some extremely complex calculations, (that lack of available hosting space prevents us from going into right now), our actuarial department has deemed it to be worth another very tenuous shot. So download ‘Fly Away’ for free courtesy of Ja Ja Ja and start dancing. If it decides to work this time we’ll invite you all over for some last minute alfresco dining Dalston style.

#Friday. We’re in Brighton for The Great Escape. It’s probably going to rain again but you just never know, and if anything is going to help fight off the rainclouds it’s this.
