February 3, 2012 § Leave a comment

Taken from the album ‘At Breath’s End’

Stan says: #Friday. A gorgeous slice of 50’s pop gold courtesy of Klaus Von Barrel’s side project Die Jungen.

Omma Cobba – Wasted On A Bench

January 20, 2012 § Leave a comment

Stan says: #Friday. Wasted on a beach? Possibly. Wasted on a bench? Not so sure. Unless it’s some sort of super deluxe cushioned three seater affair located somewhere in the tropics with a gentle warm breeze and an unlimited supply of umbongo to hand. This is still good though. (Bandcamp)

The Roots – Make My

January 13, 2012 § Leave a comment

Taken from the album ‘Undun’
Out now on Mercury (iTunes)

Stan says: #Friday. Still one of our favourite cuts from the last few months and still a free download available from RCRDLBL (here). Happy weekending.

Band Of Skulls – Bruises

January 6, 2012 § Leave a comment

Taken from the album ‘Sweet Sour’
Released on Vagrant/Electric Blues/PIAS 20/2/2012

Stan says: #Friday. Is it strange that we are almost continually surprised by the fact that Band Of Skulls are from Southampton? Either way ‘Bruises’ is an ideal cobweb unsettler and our favourite Band Of Skulls tune so far by an urban mile.

The Go! Team + TV Girl

The Go! Team – ‘Voice Yr Choice’ (Tobacco Remix)
Original version taken from the album ‘Rolling Blackouts’ (iTunes)
Out now on Memphis Industries

TV Girl – ‘Benny and the Jetts’
Taken from the ‘Benny and the Jetts’ EP (Bandcamp)

Stan says: #Friday. One of our favourite bass lines of the year courtesy of The Go! Team’s Tobacco Remix, and a vintage shuffle from TV Girl that still works its up-beat magic on us despite excessive listening.

Young Dreams

Album to be released on House Of Telle/Modular Recordings 2012 (date TBC)
Download MP3 from Modular here. Visit Young Dreams here.

Stan says: #Friday. News that a full length debut by Norwegian act Young Dreams was in the offing for early 2012 was happily received around these parts. The Kingdom of Norway recently broke into our top 5 countries to be visited list, and while this is mainly down to a latent interest in Fjord jumping, songs like this never hurt.

The Dø – Quake Mountain Quake

November 25, 2011 § Leave a comment

Taken from the album Both Ways Open Jaws (iTunes)
Out now on Village Green/Get Down!/Cinq7
Stream the album here

Stan says: #Friday. One of the shortest numbers from a record that has generated significant internal division at Stan HQ. Stick with it though and we think you can find much to love in between the kookiness and often packed to the rafters arrangements … or do we?

Extra Classic – Give Me Your Love

November 18, 2011 § Leave a comment

Taken from the album
‘Your Light Like White Lightning, Your Light Like A Laser Beam’
Out now on Manimal Vinyl (US Only).

Stan says: #Friday. There are times when the streets of London Town are keen to remind those who walk them of their mortality. In the aftermath of such reminders we often fall back on a familiar musical selection for comfort, (some ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ and ‘Graceland’ here, a spot of Millie Jackson and The Staples Singers there), records whose warmth and presence we hope will shield us from the realities of the world for at least short while. But what if the hand of god were to reach down and remove said records from our grasp, telling us (rather sternly through his chosen mouthpiece), “Henceforth thou shalt only be permitted to listen to records that have been released during the past three calendar months in moments of existential trauma!!”, … what songs then we hear you ask? Well in that particular scenario we have concluded that we could start out by listening to a track like this old school sounding belter by San Franciscan five piece Extra Classic, slipping into some flares, growing a handlebar and possibly lighting some incense in a bid to really seal the deal on the C’68 vibe. And now to locate the rest of the playlist.
